Dear UPHS Members,
The Winter 2024 issue of The Streamliner is the last with Marc Entze as editor. After a twelve-year run as editor of The Streamliner, Marc is resigning to devote more time to other pursuits. Marc deserves our gratitude for an outstanding job as editor. Marc stepped in as editor in 2011 after another editor was floundering and failing to keep up. Marc got three issues out in seven months to catch up the publication cycle. Many have told me that The Streamliner stands out among railroad historical society magazines; that is due in no small measure to Marc’s efforts. Being editor of a railroad historical society magazine is a relatively thankless job, a huge amount of work for little pay and little recognition. It is clearly a labor of love. Thank you, Marc! Fortunately for us, Marc will remain active in the Society, continuing in his role as Archive Committee Co-Chair for Photographs.
Starting with the Spring issue, White River Publications will be printing The Streamliner and Dale Sanders will assume the editor position. Many of you know Dale for his superb track record of top-quality railroad photography books and magazines. Welcome, Dale!
Our 2024 Convention in Perris May 9-11 is shaping up to be a great show. Our banquet presenters Saturday evening will be J. Michael Hemmer, retired UP Senior Vice President – Law and General Counsel, and Tom Haley, retired UP Vice President of Network Planning and Operation. Mike and Tom will present “Houston, We Have a Problem,” explaining the unprecedented melt-down in UP operations in the wake of the SP merger and what was down to turn things around. Our clinics during the day on Saturday include the following: Stuart Forsyth, presenting Cajon Pass Operations During World War II, Gordon Glattenberg, presenting the LA&SL in the 1950s to the 1970s, Elrond Lawrence, presenting the LA&SL in the 1980s to the present, Tom Gildersleeve, presenting Outstanding UP Steam Photography by numerous talented photographers. and yours truly presenting the Conception and Development of the Alameda Corridor. At the museum on Friday we will ride historic equipment during the day and we will have a night photo session. On Thursday there will be an excursion to the Rail Giants exhibit and March Field Air Museum. The good folks at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum have opened their facility Wednesday through Sunday for free attendance to those showing their UPHS convention name tags. If you have never seen the outstanding recreations of the Tehachapi Grade and the Carrizo Gorge, and if you can make a visit, you are in for a treat. On Sunday May 12 you can even run your HO trains on the San Diego Model Railroad Association’s layout at the Museum. See the Convention tab on the UPHS website for more details.
I hope you can join us in Perris!
As always, I would be glad to hear your suggestions about how to improve the Society, just email me at president@uphs.org.
Best regards, Rob Leachman
